Mineral
The best sheep mineral, Protein or milk replacer we have found for quality, quantity and price with convenient form that they eat and not waste, comes from Canadian Agri-Blend Inc. Morinville, Alberta (780)939-3800 (fax 780)939-4888.
Mineral is needed free choice at all times. They will only eat what they need. Also salt blocks. Sheep can use the blue or red salt blocks (copper worries come from the old English practices where their fields had good mineral content ) this is the reverse here in Canada where many areas are deficient in Copper. Also Hair sheep seem to be less fussy about the controlled amount of copper in their feed/mineral. We use the large tubs (1/2 size of the cow tubs) and have no problem with waste or broken teeth, but it also comes in blocks or 4 cell packs.
Protein is usually only required during times of stress: lambing season, for young lambs or at weaning. Usually it is not touched by ewes outside of these times unless they feel a lack of something in their diet. This is also available in tubs, blocks or 4 cell packs.
Milk replacer should only be needed if you have multiples that a mother can not handle and these should have been attempted to put on another mother if she is feeding only a single. [discussed later] or as a supplement to mothers milk.
Sodium Bi-Carbonate: Baking Soda. This may be purchased from a feed store for about $15 for a 55 lb bag. This will help prevent bloating and assists with the feeding of grain or other feed additives like this. Take a bucket and tie it tightly to a fence (bungie cord works well) near the water trough and the sheep will go to it and eat the baking soda to relieve any stomach upset. They also teach the babies to use it as well. We were having some bloat issues but after supplying this we have had none. Simple, in-expensive solution for preventive medicine.
