EzeTrim Foot Trimmers

These are small trimmers, especially useful for folks with small hands.   Secure locking mechanism.   Available through wool growers and others.    (reg. $16)     To trim feet you need to remove folded under or folded out nails, or shorten the tips of nails that have curled up.  Always take care to not cut too short on the end of toenail as you can hit a blood vessel and cause great pain.  Take smaller pieces off each cut rather than huge chunks.  The easiest way to maintain good feet is to have a rocky area for them to walk over to help wear off edges or file down broken tips.  Also doing each ewes feet at lambing time is used by some to maintain a routine.  We find during normal weather conditions with some hard ground, ewes require very little foot care.   For diseases of the feet like foot rot please refer to the Merric Vet Manual available online now.  This is a TAKE CARE OF RIGHT NOW problem and should not be left unattended.   We have never dealt with foot disease so we can not help you there.

Handling Systems

Premier has nice pictures of good handling systems.  Use these for ideas.  The main point here is flow. if you can have sheep flow easily from area to area it makes for less stress.

In Manitoba you can access sheep equipment through the Lake Land Group.

Lake Land Group - Sheep Handling Equipment in Manitoba

Having a handling system, like in the picture above, provides a less stressful way of handling animals to provide care such as vaccinations, worming, or sorting.  It is less stressful to both the people and the animals.  It also provides time to look at the animals as they are lined up showing a better view with out crowding or milling about.  Marking animals for sorting or recording tag information is also much easier.  With our system we can divide the animals at the front of the chute into two groups, then move one group to another area and if required put all remaining animals through the barn and into the chute again dividing into two groups for further sorting.

Having the animals lined up like this also allows you to treat about 25 animals with one treatment then walking down the line and treating with a different treatment.... all with out having to catch, chase or hold down.  This system makes it possible to handle animals with only one person, but works best with two people.

Ideally there would be a tipping table with a squeeze chute at the end of the chute as well as a scale.  We have the scale but the tipping table has gone back to the design area.  For sheep an electronic scale such as those used at small-animal vet clinics work well.  Ours is taken into a clean building when not in use and is large enough to hold a ram on it's surface.

Vaccinations
All small ruminents should have vaccinations appropriate to the area you live in.  Please check with other shepherds in your area to see what is required.  Usually a version of an 8 way vaccine such as Tasvax.
Wormer

We were told by a large feed lot operator and major buyer a few years ago to change to Valbazan wormer and never looked back!  It is very effective.  We worm the ewes at lambing (when we give first time lambers their collar tags) and then again 1 month (20 days minimum) before putting the rams in with them.

Lambs are wormed at weaning.  (Day they are separated from mothers)  Butcher lambs may not be sold/butchered for minimum 20 days after worming.

Face Value: Sheep & Smiles
It seems sheep are discerning eaters?at least when it comes to who serves them. In a 2004 study, researchers at Cambridge University in England gave sheep the choice of two doors to push open to get food. One door depicted a smiling human, the other an angry one. By a vast majority, the sheep chose the door with the smiling face.
