Shelly & Carl's Herd
Shelley & Carl were pleased to welcome 5 ewe lambs from 3 of thier 4 ewes this spring (2010). Pictured at left is the sire for their lambs.
Shelley started with 2 lambs for her first year of shepherding. That year her ewes gave her one lamb each as yearlings. She sold the ram lamb and purchased an additional ewe lamb to give her 4 ewes. On her second lambing season Shelley was happy to have her herd increase to 9 ewes.
In 2011, 7 of the 9 ewes lambed with a total of 10 lambs (7males & 3 females). One from each of last years sets of twins did not lamb yet in 2011.
Along the way she has not just gained a herd of sheep, but also learned a lot about animal health and care, as well as developed a friendship.

Shelley is now also busy training her pup, "Black Jack". He is a son of our Skeet.
Cameron
Cameron came to our ranch the first time with his Grand-parents to buy a few lambs. Since then, we have spent some very enjoyable time mentoring Cameron with his sheep as well as having developed an easy friendship with his Grand-parents. It has been a pleasure to watch Cameron grow and now as a teen he is becoming quite a good stockman. Cameron chooses his own rams for breeding and has developed a nice little herd over the years.
Look for Cameron on our Border Collie pages with video links to Neepawa Biginners Luck Competition which he won with our Kit in 2010. : )
Mentoring Program
A farm visit will differ from our mentoring program in that we will not be providing the extended support that is automatically provided with the purchase of a purebred ram or joining our mentorship program.
We start by sitting down to 'coffee' and work through all the questions as you come with and provide as much information as you can handle. This is followed by a walk through of our working operation with commentary and more answers to your questions on how things work.
We can not tell you how to make $100,000 in a year or how many sheep will give you the income you desire. These things are dependant on the market, your care and attention to your sheep and what you choose to buy for a flock. We can help you learn to assess what to purchase.
Due to an overabundant response to our mentoring program we now have put a fee to our service but it is refundable by purchase of stock through us... We charge $250 for the first visit which is usually about 4 hours {from several years of doing this ... it seems to be the right amount of time... more is too much to take in and less leaves too many questions.} We have hands on discussion with the actual sheep, pointing out what you want, don't want, and the differences in breed traits and qualities. We discuss records and registrations, predator control and herding, medications and minerals, feed and suppliments.
We help with ram selection advice. We are available for future visits and phone or email support. If you are near enough we will make visits to you and offer suggestions or if you are far by email, through discussion or pictures or phone calls. We will assist you with learning what is required to raise healthy lambs and be able to enjoy your sheep. Also if you wish, you can visit during lambing to learn what we do hands on. We try to assist you in locating the quality of sheep or lambs that will start you on the right track.
But.... with the fee you will have the opportunity to recoup all your investment through livestock purchases at the rate of $50 discount for each registered ram, $25 discount for each crossbred ram, $50 discount for each Akbash pup (LGD) and $70 discount for each registered Border Collie pup to a maximum discount of $250.oo. Or provided with purchase of Purebred ram on your first visit.
As of February 9, 2012 the butcher market price for lamb at Winnipeg Auction is $1.89 to $2.10 for a 100 lb lamb. Toronto at that same time is at $2.02 to $2.19 for 100 lb lamb. On January 5, 2012 at the Winnipeg sale Dorper Cross lambs at 81 lbs brought $200.07 each or $2.47 per pound {MB Co-operator}.
A receipt is issued at time of payment for entry into the mentoring program.

Face Value: Sheep & Smiles
It seems sheep are discerning eaters?at least when it comes to who serves them. In a 2004 study, researchers at CambridgeUniversity in England gave sheep the choice of two doors to push open to get food. One door depicted a smiling human, the other an angry one. By a vast majority, the sheep chose the door with the smiling face.
