Shelter & Fencing

Shelter

Sheep Barn:  we use a pole shed for shelter which is 16ft x 60ft.  It is closed in on the two ends with ability to divide into five 12 foot sections inside. So you can have 12.. 24... or 36 foot enclosures or the whole barn.  We have two pens (one can be divided again if we want but find that very difficult working that way.) on the east side of the barn (out of wind) and inside we section off an area where only lambs can go with more shelter and heat lamps when required.  There are 4 lambing jugs and a head gate box at the north end... we usually lamb in the north side and rotate through the barn to the southpen with the lambs... there is then one 24 foot section for lambing/bonding (next to jugs for ease of slipping mom & lambs in if necessary)... then a 12 foot section for making sure everyone know who mom is ..... then they move to an area with free access to outside....

Fencing

We use wood panneling fences for the barn and yard area.  These make keeping lambs contained with the ewes easier.  Removing one spacing of fence board also allows for lambs to move outside the ewe's area so that they can be fed their own bale.  This allows either better feed such as second cut alfalfa or pellets to be accessed by the lambs without competition from the ewes.

For perimeter fences we use 5 string high tensile electric fencing.  Properly installed fencing starting just 6 inches from the ground with the ground cleared prior to starting to fence allows the bottom wire to stay free of regrowth as well as keeping lambs and sheep in as they touch the hot wire with thier ear as they graze and this makes a good connection to teach respect for fences.  We can keep groups seperated easily with crossfencing of this high tensile wiring in our pastures.  To ensure that your electric fence really works it should be installed according to the manufacturors instructions and purchase as large a unit as you can for your application.  Too small is the same as none at all.  It is also a good idea to have a fault finder to be sure that the fence is working corectly and is checked routinely.

For more secure fencing you might use a stucko mesh (very small squares) or a heavy gage roll of concrete reinforcing wire.  We use this wire for welding into large pannels that can be used together, stand alone or used as gates.  Cattle stock pannels can also be used for gate applications.

Hair sheep do not seem to need the intense fencing that goats do and unlike wool sheep seem to have respect for electric fences.  As long as there is appropriate food available in their pasture they will not try to move to other areas outside thier fence.

Face Value: Sheep & Smiles
It seems sheep are discerning eaters?at least when it comes to who serves them. In a 2004 study, researchers at Cambridge University in England gave sheep the choice of two doors to push open to get food. One door depicted a smiling human, the other an angry one. By a vast majority, the sheep chose the door with the smiling face.
